Effects of Education on the Family Burden, Depression and Quality of Life among the Family Members of Schizophrenic Patients

Abstract

|
Objective : To elucidate the effects of family education on family Burden, depression, and quality of life of the family members of schizophrenic patients in order of develop a family education program.
Method : A sample of 20 family members of schizophrenic patients were recruited randomly for the experiment(E) group, and 21 selected for the control(C) group, in match with age, sex, and education level. While C group was not exposed to the education, E group underwent the family education once a week for 3 weeks. Family burden, depression, and quality of life were evaluated at the baseline and at the ending of education in both groups.
Results : Total scores of family burden were decreased after the education is E group. Besides, total scores of family burden after the education were significantly lower in E group than in C group. Depression scores were significantly decreased after the education in E group, and significantly lower in E group than in C group after the education. However, quality of life scores after the education were not improved and did not show different between the two groups.
Conclusion : The education for the family of schizophrenic patients developed in the present study decreased family burden and depression.
